The Power of Perseverance in Music: A Teacher's Reflection

As a music teacher, I have had the privilege of working with students of all backgrounds and abilities. Over the years, I have come to realize that while talent can be a wonderful gift, it is perseverance that truly defines success in music. At Maison Melodia, I have seen students with natural abilities struggle because they lack the motivation to push themselves further. On the other hand, I have witnessed students who may not have started with a strong voice or perfect pitch but, through sheer determination, have transformed into confident, expressive singers.

Some students are naturally gifted—they can hear a melody once and replicate it effortlessly. Yet, without discipline and the desire to improve, that talent remains stagnant. Others may not have been born with an exceptional voice, but their hunger to grow, their willingness to practice, and their drive to overcome challenges set them apart. The most inspiring progress I have seen comes from those who embrace the journey, step by step, pushing themselves beyond what they once believed possible.

Just imagine a student with a gift receiving the right training and practicing regularly. This student would then have more opportunities to enter the wide world of music—not just within their home country, but internationally. With dedication and the right guidance, their talent could open doors to prestigious competitions, collaborations, and careers on global stages.

Another deeply rewarding part of my journey as a teacher is having the privilege of working with students who have unique learning needs, including those with ADHD and autism. Music has the power to unlock their potential, providing them with a space to express themselves, build confidence, and develop their own artistic voice. Witnessing their progress—whether in mastering a new song, improving focus, or finding joy in making music—is incredibly fulfilling and a testament to the transformative power of perseverance.

Beyond the realm of music, the confidence and discipline gained through singing lessons can benefit students in all aspects of life. Whether they choose to pursue a career in music or apply their skills in other fields, such as business presentations or public speaking, the ability to express themselves with poise and conviction will always be an asset. As long as a student enjoys their lessons, improves their voice, and gains confidence, they are already equipping themselves with invaluable tools for the future.

One of the most inspiring examples of perseverance I have seen is that of Miraaya Pasad. She started singing in March 2022 when she was just six years old. Initially, she had difficulty following pitches and rhythms, making learning new songs particularly challenging. Although it took longer than usual for her to prepare a piece for her Grade 1 exam, she never lost her enthusiasm. She enjoyed every singing lesson and always put in her best effort, even when asked to repeat the same lines over ten times in class. Her perseverance paid off—she successfully completed her Trinity College London Grade 1 Singing Exam with Merit. Miraaya’s journey is a testament to the idea that hard work and passion can overcome any initial struggle.

As a teacher, nothing brings me more joy than seeing a student’s hard work pay off. The small victories—the first time they hit a challenging note, the moment their voice gains strength, the confidence they build along the way—these are what make the journey worthwhile.
